Stage One: The Story Often Exists Before the Script
Someone has already decided which story is worth the gamble before anyone shouts „action“ on a short drama set. Tracing a few hits backward often reveals a book at the start of the process. Adapted from the novel Shutout by Jami Davenport, ReelShort’s Breaking the Ice is a 2024 hockey romance centered on a secret child. A novel by Cora Reilly is the basis of Bound www.reelshorts.org by Honor, which ReelShort premiered on November 1, 2025, as a mafia arranged-marriage series. In Korea, the 2026 office romance Quiet in the Office!, which carries a 19+ age rating, is adapted from a web novel and webtoon. Several app owners also operate reading businesses, which keeps source material close at hand: Holywater runs the books app My Passion, Crazy Maple Studio makes the interactive-story app Chapters, and GoodShort’s Google Play developer name is GoodNovel. If there is no book to draw on, writers rely on reliable tropes such as billionaire romance, revenge, family drama and identity reveals. Every scene has to serve up a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds, so the script’s job is to condense a long drama story into such scenes.
Stage Two: Casting Faces Viewers Know
It’s at the casting stage that the format’s economics surface on screen. On IMDb, the cast lists for short series keep featuring the same names. ReelShort’s werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha was headlined by Noah Fearnley in 2024 and he came back in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance story about a former football star. Rosa Singerman headlined both Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia on GoodShort in 2025, playing opposite Franky Cammarata in the second. When a series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over, it counts for a lot that a lead with a following on one app comes to the next title with a head start. Producers are also casting with a certain viewer in mind, since TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort’s users were women. DramaBox has a production team in Los Angeles.
Stage Three: Seventy Episodes Filmed in About Eight Days
According to TheWrap, a Western short drama typically costs $150,000 to $300,000 per series and is filmed in eight to ten days. Wikipedia’s overview of the format offers a similar picture, putting a seven- to ten-day shoot at $150,000 to $250,000 for 50 to 70 or more episodes. When a 70-episode series is shot in eight days, the arithmetic works out to close to nine episodes‘ worth of material every working day. Jiuzhou Culture, among the Chinese producers selling abroad, has reported leaner numbers still, putting a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. Each finished episode then costs roughly $1,400 to $2,100. According to Jiuzhou, about 80 percent of the more than 600 titles it had made for overseas markets were dubbed Chinese adaptations and 20 percent were original overseas productions. With dubbing, a studio can reuse a finished domestic series, meaning the costly shoot happens only once.
Stage Four: Cutting Episodes to 60–100 Seconds
Framed vertically at 9:16 for a phone, the footage is sliced into episodes of 60 to 100 seconds in the editing room. At that length an episode has room for a turn or two of plot, so each one is built around a question the next episode promises to answer. The house style is the cliffhanger: the mechanism that carries you from one installment to the next. Piece those fragments together and a 70-episode series amounts to roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time. On GoodShort’s official pages, My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen is listed with 30 episodes and The Dragon King’s Return shows 100 episodes; episode counts differ widely by title. Viewers who never open the app can still catch the same footage, because ReelShort also runs official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion. Editors are, in other words, shaping video dramas for several screens at the same time.
Stage Five: Choosing Where the Paywall Falls
The final creative decision is also a commercial one. Free access covers the first eight to ten episodes in the standard model TheWrap describes. The free run on ReelShort is usually five to 15 episodes, according to its own blog, and TheWrap counted the first eight in 2024. After that, episodes are unlocked with coins, and ReelShort’s blog gives the standard cost of an episode as about 60 coins. You can also buy a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and auto-renews, or earn coins by watching ads, with one ad unlocking two premium episodes according to the same blog. Prices differ by platform, country and promotion, so your store may show something different. Paywalls landing right on a cliffhanger rank among the most common complaints about these apps, along with auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs, which is why placement is the contentious part. Tools that promise a way around the wall, such as coin generators and modded „unlimited coins“ apps, are unofficial and best avoided.
Stage Six: Animation and AI-Made Series
The camera is removed entirely in the newest production stage. Animated motion comics now sit alongside ReelShort’s live-action catalogue. The Lost Heir, a 58-episode family saga, tracks Arthur Lancaster, who loses his memory rescuing his brother, grows up on a farm as „Johnny“ and eventually exposes the foster sister who kept framing him. Shattered Vows, a 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, is an AI-generated animated motion comic about heiress Vanessa Windsor seeking revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister’s killer escape, and it lists no cast. It should not be confused with a separate 58-episode ShortMax series of the same name. No app has gone further than DramaWave: 36Kr reported that more than 80 percent of its newly released content is AI-generated and that the app’s annualized revenue topped $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. Outside the apps, AI video dramas have spread too, as Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island featuring fruit contestants, showed on TikTok in March 2026 before critics widely branded it „AI slop“.
Stage Seven: A Hollywood Studio Steps Onto the Line
Traditional studios have noticed, most visibly Fox Entertainment. In October 2025, Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app, took on an equity investment from Fox. Fox also made a pledge to produce more than 200 vertical titles over two years. Included in the Fox-produced series already on the app are Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart’s Offside. My Drama won the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service, and Holywater raised a further $22 million in January 2026 in a round led by Horizon Capital. A network-scale producer committing to that volume suggests the eight-day shoot has shifted from curiosity to line item.
The Production Line Summed Up

Placed side by side, the stages bring the logic of the business into focus. Much of the rest is organized around the shoot, which is the expensive, fixed block. Scripts tend to come pre-tested as novels or familiar tropes, casting leans on familiar faces, and the edit is designed around cliffhangers that feed a paywall. TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the category, although fans who search for a „reel short drama“ usually are thinking of ReelShort titles. The table below relies only on publicly reported figures to sum up typical time and cost at each stage. When no reliable number has been published, the table says so instead of guessing.
| Stage of production | Usual time / cost | What takes place |
|---|---|---|
| Source material and script | No public number | A novel, web fiction or a proven trope gets adapted; Breaking the Ice adapts Shutout, and Bound by Honor adapts Cora Reilly’s novel |
| Cast selection | No public figure | Leads are chosen, often actors with earlier short-drama credits; animated titles skip this stage |
| Shoot | 7–10 days; $150K–250K (Wikipedia) or $150K–300K per series (TheWrap); $100K–150K per 70 episodes (Jiuzhou) | 50 to 70+ episodes are filmed for a vertical frame |
| Edit | Episodes lasting 60–100 seconds | Footage is cut into installments that each end on a cliffhanger |
| Release and paywall placement | The first 8–10 episodes free (TheWrap); on ReelShort, about 60 coins per later episode | Viewers unlock episodes with coins, with ads or with a weekly pass costing about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 |
| AI and animation | Costs not disclosed | Motion comics including The Lost Heir and Shattered Vows; over 80 percent of DramaWave’s new releases AI-generated |
| Studio co-production | 200+ titles over two years (Fox for My Drama) | An established studio makes vertical series for an app |
